Distributed File Storage System with Replication & Fault Tolerance

A mini Google-Drive-style system that splits files into chunks, stores copies on several nodes and keeps working when a node fails.

Compiled for you, not resold

Every codebase is compiled to order, configured with its own database migrations and bundled with a report written to your university’s format, so your submission never matches anyone else’s. Deliverables reach your vault within 10 to 12 working days, depending on demand and how much customisation you ask for.

Problem Statement & Abstract

How do services like Google Drive or Dropbox keep files safe when hard disks fail? This project answers that question by building a simplified distributed file system from scratch, the kind of system design topic interviewers love.

Files uploaded through a React web interface are split into fixed-size chunks. A metadata server decides where each chunk lives using consistent hashing and stores three copies on different storage nodes, each running in its own Docker container. Every chunk has a SHA-256 checksum, so corrupted data is detected and repaired from a healthy copy.

Storage nodes send heartbeats; when one stops responding, the metadata server marks it dead and re-replicates its chunks to the remaining nodes so three copies always exist. Downloads read chunks in parallel from the fastest available nodes. A cluster dashboard shows nodes, disk usage and replication status, and you can stop containers during the viva to prove that files remain downloadable. The report compares the design with HDFS and Amazon S3.

Key Features

  • Files split into 4 MB chunks with SHA-256 checksums
  • Replication factor of 3 across independent storage nodes
  • Consistent hashing for balanced chunk placement
  • Heartbeats and automatic re-replication when a node fails
  • Corruption detection and self-repair from healthy replicas
  • Parallel chunk downloads from the fastest nodes
  • Cluster dashboard: nodes, capacity and replica health
  • Docker Compose cluster for a live failure demo
