Most voice assistants work best in English, leaving many Indian users behind. This project builds a voice assistant that understands and replies in several Indian languages using open-source models.
A Flutter mobile app records the user’s speech. The backend detects the language, converts speech to text, translates it between English and Indian languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Bengali, and converts the reply back to natural-sounding speech. Users can translate conversations in two-way mode, which helps travellers, healthcare workers and shopkeepers talk across languages.
In assistant mode, the user asks questions about weather, government schemes or general knowledge in their own language and hears the answer spoken back. Offline phrase packs work without the internet for common phrases. The report compares word error rate and translation quality (BLEU) across languages and discusses the challenges of code-mixed speech such as Hinglish.
