Problem Statement & Abstract
Sending sensitive files by email or messaging apps leaves copies everywhere. This project offers a safer way, inspired by services such as Firefox Send: files are encrypted before upload and links stop working after a set time or number of downloads.
The browser encrypts each file with a random AES-256 key and uploads only the encrypted data. The key is placed in the part of the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to the server, so the server cannot decrypt the file. Senders choose an expiry (1 hour to 7 days), a download limit and an optional password, and can revoke a link at any time.
Recipients open the link, the file is downloaded and decrypted in their browser, and the download count is updated. Expired files are deleted automatically by a scheduled job. Each file’s access log records time and approximate location, and the sender gets an email when a file is downloaded. The Django backend stores metadata in PostgreSQL and applies rate limits to stop link guessing.
