Problem Statement & Abstract
Password managers are only trustworthy if the company running them cannot read your passwords. This project builds a zero-knowledge vault: encryption happens on the user’s device and the server stores only scrambled data.
From the master password, the browser derives a key using PBKDF2 with a unique salt and hundreds of thousands of iterations. Each vault item (website, username, password, notes) is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it leaves the browser, and the server only ever receives ciphertext plus a separate authentication hash, so the master password is never transmitted.
Users can generate strong passwords, check them against known data breaches using k-anonymity (only the first five characters of a hash are sent), organise items in folders and copy passwords that clear from the clipboard after 30 seconds. The vault locks automatically when idle, supports two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, and a security dashboard flags weak, reused and breached passwords. The report includes a threat model.
